Meet Tom
By Jenna Taylor
Now, I would like you here today to give a warm welcome back to our beekeeper, Tom! This 5’11, dark-haired man has just been hired here again to keep track of our bees for us. Say hello, Tom!
Tom waves.
Tom zips into his suit and picks up his watering can. Tom waters the bees. You watch Tom water the bees for quite a long time.
The beehive is now flooded.
Oh my, Tom! What technique is this?
From his position on the theater stage, Tom looks at you. He’s smiling as if being forced to continue pouring water out of the can. (Which should be empty by now). Alright, Tom, we’re getting a little tired now. Do something else please.
Now, something you may not have known about Tom is that he also used to do circus performances as a child, with his traveling circus siblings.
Tom nods happily, recalling his sister and brother.
His sister died yesterday.
Tom frowns.
I meant today.
Tom’s frown deepens and he cries.
Tom collects himself, and picks up the three baseballs that were rolling around on the stage floor this whole time.
Tom does a really choice job with his juggling skills.
We clap.
Tom stops, he seems tired. Tom has not slept in three days.
Would you like to see Tom do another trick?
Tom sighs and looks to us with desperation.
Now, another thing our talented fellow Tom here knows how to do is shoot a gun. Tom holds a gun in his hands, he examines it curiously.
Yes Tom, you know how to use the gun.
Tom will now demonstrate he can use the gun by shooting his parents who are standing right next to him right now, as they have been this whole time.
Tom stops hesitating to kill his mother and father, who raised him with his circus siblings and loved him and would give the world to see him happy.
Finally, Tom kills the only family he has left.
Tom is crying. Again, I might add.
Tom questions why you continue to watch him decay, Tom does not want to be watched anymore.
In your head, in your mind, in the thought of Tom that you create, there are so many images of him and he wants you to stop looking at them. Stop learning about Tom. Stop reading about Tom. Tom is going insane, why are you watching him go insane? Stop watching Tom, stop learning about Tom, stop reading about Tom.
Please.
Tom is empty and alone, is this what you want to read?
Now you know Tom.
